Is that Roof Inspector Legit?

What would you do if you saw unauthorized people walking around on your roof after a hailstorm? It sounds crazy, but that’s exactly what happened to a homeowner in Gainesville, Florida, after one of this fall’s hailstorms. The homeowner called the police to report that two people were walking around on the roof of his garage, “inspecting” the roof for damage after a recent hailstorm. When questioned, the would-be roof inspectors said they were sent by the homeowner’s insurance company to inspect the roof for damage. This wasn’t true. They were actually from Dallas, Texas, and had no connection to the homeowner’s insurance company. They were also found to be operating a drone for commercial purposes without a proper license. Let’s look at ways to know, is this roof inspector legit?

While fraudulent roof inspectors are not a common problem when it comes to roofing repair in Kansas City, it’s always a good idea to keep your eyes open and report any suspicious activity taking place in your neighborhood. These trespassers could have been checking houses out for easy points of entry. Or maybe they just had the wrong address.

Use Common Sense

Insurance companies don’t typically send an inspector to a home without notifying the homeowner first. If someone shows up at your door claiming to represent your insurance company, ask them for verification that they’re with your insurance company or are with a legitimate Kansas City roofing contractor. If they can’t produce evidence that they’re who they say the are – and you know you haven’t filed an insurance claim –  politely tell them to leave. If you see any other activity that looks out of place or suspicious, don’t take chances. Report it to the authorities.
