The ABCs of Commercial Roofs
There are many types of commercial roofs available today. Business owners who are in the market for a flat roof in Omaha may feel overwhelmed when trying to sort through what’s best for their building needs. Shamrock Roofing and Construction, a leading Omaha commercial roofing contractor, is here to help clear things up. Below is a quick overview of three of the most common types of commercial roofs and some of the characteristics of each.
EPDM
EPDM stands for ethylene propylene diene terpolymer. This is a synthetic rubber material that’s been around for many years and is commonly used by commercial flat roofers because it’s durable, easy to apply, and is a low-cost commercial roof option. EPDM roofs have a lifespan of 25 – 30 years or more, making them cost-effective and an excellent investment for business owners in and around Omaha.
PVC
PVC stands for polyvinyl chloride. PVC is a vinyl membrane roofing material that provides substantial energy efficiency because of its UV properties and reflective white color. Although a PVC flat roof membrane can be pricey, it’s a good option for a flat roof in Omaha because of its substantial lifespan of 20+ years. A PVC roof is a good option in areas of the city where there are no mature trees to help shade the building.
TPO
TPO stands for thermoplastic polyolefin. This is the “greenest” of the three commercial roofing options. A TPO flat roof membrane is a single-ply flat roof that can be mechanically fastened, fully adhered, or ballasted (weighted down with something like heavy rock or gravel). Seams are stronger than with EPDM roofs, and since there are no plasticizers added as there are with PVC roofs, TPO roofs are considered more eco-friendly. Although TPO roofs generally last between 15 and 20 years and are not as flexible as PVC, they’re generally less expensive and are considered a good investment by commercial flat roofers in Omaha.
